M&A transactions in Portugal reach € 9.3 billion in 2024

The Portuguese transaction market recorded 461 deals, totaling € 9.3 billion from January to October 2024, according to the last report from TTR Data. Of these, 39% disclosed their values. These figures represent a 20% decline in the number of transactions compared to the same period in 2023, along with a 23% decrease in capital mobilized.

In october alone, the report states, 44 mergers and acquisitions were recorded, both announced and completed, with a total value of € 248.05 million. By sector, real estate was the most active in 2024, with 80 transactions, followed by the Internet, software & IT services sector with 53 transactions, marking a 23% decrease compared to 2023.

Countries investing the most in Portugal

In terms of transaction numbers, Spain and France were the countries investing the most in Portugal during the period, with 53 and 28 transactions, respectively. Portuguese companies chose Spain and the United Kingdom as primary investment destinations, with 34 and 13 transactions, respectively. Foreign acquisitions in the technology and Internet sector increased by 26% compared to the same period in 2023.

As of October 2024, there were 51 private equity transactions totaling € 2,6 billion. In venture capital, 100 funding rounds were completed, with a total of € 668 million, representing a 40% increase in capital raised. In the asset acquisitions segment, 109 transactions were recorded, with a total value of € 2,9 billion, marking a 61% increase in total value.

The advisors with most transacions

In the legal advisor ranking by transaction count and value for 2024, Cuatrecasas Portugal leads with 28 transactions, totaling € 1.8 billion. In the financial advisor ranking by transaction count, Banco Santander leads in 2024 with five deals. In terms of value, J.P. Morgan Chase International Holdings leads, totaling € 900 million.
