M&A volume increases 26% in Brazil

Total transactions reach BRL166 billion until April in Brazil, according to monthly TTR report

The Brazilian transactional market recorded a total of 509 transactions with a total of BRL166 billion until April, the data are from the Transactional Track Record (TTR).

The figures represent a 26% increase in the number of transactions compared to the same period in 2020, as well as a 286% increase in total value.

In April, 112 mergers and acquisitions were recorded, between announced and completed, for a total value of BRL18.8 billion.

The Technology sector has been the most active of the year, with a total of 218 transactions, followed by Finance & Insurance with 88.

Until April 2021, Brazilian companies chose the United States as their main investment destination, with 9 transactions. The Netherlands stands out for having moved a total of BRL2.7 billion.

The United States and Argentina, with 60 and 10 transactions, respectively, are the countries that most invested in Brazil. The United States stands out with a total of BRL45.6 billion.

However, US companies acquiring Brazilian companies increased 122% in April compared to the same period in 2020, while foreign acquisitions in the Technology and Internet sectors saw an increase of 125% compared to April 2020.

As for foreign Private Equity and Venture Capital funds investing in Brazilian companies, there was a 33% increase by April 2021.

In the Venture Capital market, 171 transactions were carried out with a total of BRL13 billion, resulting in an increase of 58% in the number of transactions, compared to the previous year.

In the Asset Acquisitions segment, 39 transactions were recorded for a total of BRL27 billion until April, representing a 39% decrease in the number of transactions and a 154% increase in the capital raised, compared to the same period of 2020.

The transaction highlighted by TTR in April 2021, was the completion of the joint sale by Petrobras and Wobben Windpower in Eólica Mangue Seco 3 and Eólica Mangue Seco 4 to V2i Transmissão de Energia.

The transaction, which totalled approximately BRL183 million, had the legal advice of the law firm Tauil & Chequer Advogados Associados a Mayer Brown.

In terms of ranking of Legal advisors, by the number of transactions in 2021, FM/Derraik Advogados leads with 21 transactions, and in value, Mattos Filho, Veiga Filho, Marrey Jr. e Quiroga Advogados leads with BRL72.7 billion.
